Abstract
Man and the circumstances influencing his activities have always interested Georges Duhamel. This concern developed from a profound desire to aid, to improve, and to cure the ills of mankind. Having become a physician, he was able to fulfill his wishes, particularly in his surgical experiences on the battle front where he treated thousands for all types of human miseries. From his contacts with and his observations of numerous pain wrecked bodies, he resolved to study man even more closely, to discover thus deeper sentiments, in order to help him more efficaciously. Through literature he began to express his ideas of man as he knew him, not as an isolated individual but as a part of society. following the trend of the moderns, Duhamel attempted to reveal the inner emotions of man amidst the problems, trial, defeats, and triumphs of social life.
